Had an opportunity to test out some lens combinations this past week and was able to catch some of the wading birds at Electric Lake in action. Blue Heron If you look closely at the Heron’s neck, you’ll see that it has a decent flesh wound. Herons can be quite territorial with regard to other Herons and this one likely sustained this damage in a territorial dispute. Great Egret While the Heron mostly feeds at dusk and dawn, the Egret is fairly active all day long and you can watch it hunt and fly from spot to spot. […]
If you said swallows, you’d be largely right. Park Ridge will never be confused for San Juan Capistrano, but the swallows have indeed returned to Electric Lake and can be seen in good numbers. So far I’ve been able to photograph three types of swallows swooping, dipping and diving over the lake. Tree Swallows Northern Rough Winged Swallows Barn Swallows In addition to the insects the swallows are intercepting in the air, they are also picking them up off of the surface of the water. If you are near some of the shrub growth or trees you will also see […]
Took advantage of the few hours of sun and slightly warmer temperatures to play around with the camera. The birds of spring are starting to appear at Electric Lake in Park Ridge. Of course some of the winter hold outs are still here. The Ring Neck Ducks aren’t ready to leave yet. The sound of Common Grackles still fills the air, particularly along mill road. Plenty of Robins too, the harbinger of Spring These wood ducks won’t be around for long, there are two pairs hanging around the north end of the lake. Green Wing Teal have also made a […]
In Iceland I was able to photograph some birds that I would otherwise not have the ability to see in NJ. When I found out it was Puffin nesting season, I was very excited to try and capture them. I had visions of larger groups of Puffins within easy shooting distance of my 200-500 lens. However, the reality was quite different. Unfortunately, out short travel plans meant I didn’t have the time to chase locations or consider optimal times for activity and light. I ended up heading to Vik at about 9:00 at night, which while still light out was […]
Went out to take some test shots with the new camera and lens combination and was able to get these shots of some marsh inhabitants enjoying low tide.
